Hard times for cash ISA savers as many 12 month bonus rates deals end

It's well-known that cash ISA providers often use attractive bonus rates to entice new savers. While these high rates can offer a good deal in the short term, it's absolutely vital to keep an eye on when these preferential rates end.

According to Moneycomms.co.uk, some cash ISAs opened a year ago are set to suffer up to an 85% fall in rates as their year-long bonuses end.

5 Good Reasons To Use Your ISA Allowance By 5th April 2013

At the start of each financial year, HMRC set a cap on how much each individual can put into an ISA over the course of the next twelve months. You can either invest your full allowance in an investment ISA, or put up to half in a cash ISA and the rest in an investment ISA. This year's allowance is £11,280, which gives you up to £5,640 to put into a cash ISA.

But why should you use your ISA allowance? Perhaps you feel like it's not really relevant to you because you already have a different type of savings or investment plan, or maybe you're not sure what an ISA involves.

Low cash ISA rates - What are my options?

In the last tax year over 11 million new cash ISAs were opened, hitting a value of £38 billion according to HMRC.

Since the 2011/12 tax year, the rates of interest being offered to UK savers on ISA accounts have tumbled, with many cash ISA providers now offering rates that are lower than the prevailing rate of price inflation, which measured at 3% as at end of November 2012.

A survey by Nationwide Savings based on 2000 ISA savers has suggested that more people used all of their £15,240 ISA allowance last year than did in the previous year when it was £15,000.

Over one in five (21%) of the ISA savers surveyed by Nationwide Savings answered that they up their entire ISA Allowance in the 2015/16 tax year, up from 18% savers who managed to for the 2014/15 tax year.

Men were found to be more likely than women to have used all of their allowance, with around one in four of the men surveyed stating that they used up their whole allowance last year.

The survey also found that over 60% of ISA savers were unaware of the changes to ISA rules, which mean that providers can offer more flexible products that permit savers to withdraw money from the ISA and replace it, within the same tax year, without this affecting their annual ISA Allowance. When asked 31% of savers said that these rules would make them more inclined to use an ISA.

23% of savers said that after having previously withdrawn money from their ISAs they did not have enough of their overall ISA allowance remaining to redeposit the same amount of cash later on in the tax-year.

The annual ISA Allowance will increase from April 2017 to a maximum of £20,000.

How much can I pay into an ISA?

21st March 2019

Each tax year, there's a limit set by the government to the amount you can save and invest in ISAs: your “annual ISA allowance”. The allowances are intended to reward savers and encourage us to invest more to support our future retirements, without creating a tax haven that can be taken advantage of by very wealthy individuals who just want to avoid paying tax.
