Your returns are based on the performance of an index or commodity. If the investment does not perform well you may receive no income or capital growth, but you can be confident that your capital will be repaid. You have no access to your deposit during the term of the account, typically 3 to 6 years but your original capital will be repaid in full at the end of the term. In the event that the deposit taker is unable to repay your initial investment and any returns stated you may be entitled to compensation from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) depending on your individual circumstances.

Compare ISAs

Isa.co.uk allows you to compare some of the best ISAs on the market. We use up-to-date information from Fair Investment to bring you a selection of the leading products. The comparison tables on the site allow you to evaluate different ISA types such as cash ISAs and investment ISAs, including income and growth investment options.

Compare cash ISAs

Our cash ISA tables allow you to compare leading fixed rate and instant access cash ISA deals. We also provide alternative cash ISA options for people looking for better returns than those currently offered by traditional fixed rate products. For example, we include structured deposit plans, which offer the potential for FTSE 100-linked returns without risking capital on the stock market.

Compare stocks and shares ISAs

A stocks and shares ISA is a great way of saving for people who are looking to make their savings to work harder than in a cash ISA. If you're happy to accept a level of risk - and are aware that the value of your investments may go down as well as up over the longer term - then an investment ISA has the potential to provide greater returns. Whether you're looking to lay aside a regular amount or a lump sum, investing through an ISA ensures that your income and capital gains benefit from tax-efficient growth.

Types of ISA

You can have one of each type of ISA in any given tax year; e.g. one cash ISA and one stocks and shares ISA.

Cash ISAs

Cash ISA allowance - £5,760 per person, per year.

Cash ISA rules - You must be at least 16 and a UK resident or Crown employee. Transfers in, whether from existing cash ISAs and/or cash ISAs from previous years, are permitted. You cannot open more than one cash ISA per year.

Stocks and shares ISAs

Stocks and shares ISA allowance - £11,520 per person, per year.

Stocks and shares ISA rules - You must be over 18 and a UK resident or Crown employee. Transfers in from both investment and cash ISAs, from both current and previous years, are permitted. You cannot open more than one stocks and shares ISA per year.

Junior ISAs

Junior ISA allowance - £3,720 per child, per year.

Hunior ISA rules - The child must be under 18 and live in the UK. They must not already hold a Child Trust Fund (CTF) account. Each eligible child is permitted to hold one junior cash ISA and one junior stocks and shares ISA in a year, as long as the total amount invested during the tax year does not exceed the allowance above. If child is under 16, someone with parental responsibility must open the account for them.
